The Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets run with the Android operating system (OS) for mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. It was developed by Google. Samsung and Amazon are the main companies producing android phones and tablets.
Android is the most popular mobile operating system worldwide, Apple iOS is the most popular in the US. iOS is only used in phones and tablets produced by Apple.

iOS is generally considered more straightforward and user-friendly for most people, with a simpler interface and less customization options, while Android offers greater flexibility for customization but can have a steeper learning curve due to its wider range of features and settings.
For things like browsing the web, YouTube and email they are both good and compatible.

The Samsung Tab S3 was introduced in 2017.
Android 9 is the highest version that will run on the S3.

Go to recent apps and scroll up to close an app.
I did a factory reset and added some basic apps that didn't require a google account.
Play store is where you download more google apps and Samsung Store has some Samsung specific apps.

The tablet fit between my dashboard and windshield on my old car with some gerry rigged device to hold it up.

The bottom row of apps is the home, and stays pretty constant.
The rows above seem to change as you add apps and can be scrolled left or right.

This tablet was originally purchased from Verizon which required a voice service charge and sim card. The sim card has been removed to avoid error messages. The Verizon stuff doesn't work.
You will probably want a google account to get android apps from the Play Store and Samsumg apps from the Samsung Store.
What you can do without a google app:
Run the google chrome browser run google maps, but you will be asked to login to google to update it. or web browsing

Messaging Issue:
Unless you connect your android tablet to a carrier like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, ... this does not apply.
Until 2025 Apple had an messaging service iMessage which allowed more graphical content using, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). Android devises (e.g. Samsung) used Short Message Service (SMS) the original standard. They were compatible for simple messages, but some messages with images, audio and video did not work on android.
In 2025 Apple switched to Rich Communications Services (RCS) which is used on android phones and tablets.
