West Shore > Do dead bodies sink in Tahoe and never come up |
There is a theory that if you drown in Tahoe you will sink to the bottom and never come up because the cold water 40 to 50° F during February and March, 58° at the surface in July, warms to 65 to 70°F during August and September. and never above 39° below 600 ft.)
See Tahoe Water Temperature.
A body in the water starts to sink as soon as the air in its lungs is replaced with water. Once submerged, the body stays underwater until the bacteria in the gut and chest cavity produce enough gas—methane, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide—to float it to the surface like a balloon.
This usually happens in few days, longer in cooler water.
In cold water, the bacterial action that causes a body to bloat with gas may be so slowed that and the high pressure limites bloating so the body stays on the bottom. The skin will absorb water and peel away from the underlying tissues in about a week and fish, crabs and sea lice will nibble away at the flesh.
At 100 ft water temperature in the Summer at Tahoe will be about 10° colder than than the surface. At 200 ft it will be 15-18° colder, 45° in the summer.
There were stories of the mob getting rid of bodies in Tahoe.
in The godfather Part 2, Fredo was killed and dumped in the lake.
Rubicon point where the 2025 accident, killing 8 people occurred was near the Rubicon Wall, an almost vertical drop off that goes down over 200 ft just off shore which is a famous scuba diving location. It is part of Emerald Bay Underwater State Park It is about 45º F at that depth in July.
Cold water also encourages the formation of adipocere. This is a waxy, soapy substance formed from the fat in the body that partially protects the body against decomposition. Bodies have been retrieved almost completely intact from sea waters below 7°C (45° F) after several weeks, and as recognisable skeletons after five years.
Most of Tahoe is deeper than scuba divers can go, 100 feet. It is reduced because of the low atmosphere pressure at 6,000 ' elevation.
The drop-off at Rubicon Point, the site of the 2025 boating accident with the loss of 8 lives, is the where Rubicon Wall, a famous suba diving site at is.
It drops down hundreds of feet from the shore, often in dead-vertical craggy granite cliffs. A body sinking here would be beyond the reach of advanced scuba divers.
The 2 missing passengers were located 1 and 2 days after the accident at 300' there by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Hasty Team using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), which is equipped with cameras, lights, sonar, and an articulating arm.
In September 27, 2020, Keith Cormican of Black River Falls, Wisconsin. recovered the body of Ryan Normole nine weeks after he drowned at 1,565 feet near the California Nevada border in North Tahoe.
Cormican runs Bruce’s Legacy, a nonprofit search-and-recovery operation.
In 2017, Cormican recovered two men from separate drownings in 245 feet of water on Lake Tahoe.
