About I-80 Sierra Nevada
These pages were based on similar information from
"Mac Travel Guide", a set of FileVision templates published in 1986
to demonstrate the concept of hypermedia.
They were later ported to HyperCard. Thanks to the WWW they can now be made
widely available and enhanced with maps and information from
government sources such as maps from the
Census Bureau,
the USGS
and information from CalTrans.
Some of the questions they answer are:
- What is the frequency of the radio station with the road conditions?
- The road report says chains are required at Kingvale, but my map
doesn't show Kingvale. Where is it?
- I just heard on the radio that chains are required and I don't have
any. Is there a place between here and the chain control area where I can
purchase them?
- The highway is closed because of a jack-knifed truck. Where is the
nearest motel?
- I just noticed my gas guage is on "E". Should I go back to the last
gas station I saw or is there another one comming up?
- I'm falling asleep. Where is the nearest mini-mart or starbucks where I can get a
cup of coffee?
- Traffic seems to be blocked; Can I bypass it with that side road or
will it take me into the wilderness?
Much of the information here is not available on the common yellow page and
mapping web pages, because they are based on maps which do not distinguish
between jeep trails and paved roads and many gas stations are not listed in
the phone book under gas stations (may be they don't want people calling for
price comparions.)
They will be updated from user feedback.
As time permits we plan to add more services (gas, food, ...)
to the maps.
Notation: "I 80" works for the common Internet mapping programs, so we will generally us it instead of "I-80" "Interstate 80" etc.
